Biography

Alan Patrick qualified from the University of Edinburgh in 1981. He trained initially in various locations in Edinburgh and South-East Scotland, subsequently moving down to Liverpool in 1990 to complete his training. He was appointed to his first Consultant post at the Eastern General Hospital, Edinburgh in 1993 and moved to his current post at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 1998.

He was awarded an MD by the University of Edinburgh in 1994 for studies into the patho-physiology of early diabetic nephropathy, and has published widely on many areas of clinical diabetes and endocrinology, but particularly diabetic renal disease and hypoglycaemia, contributing to more than 80 papers and book chapters.

In addition to general endocrinology and diabetes, he has particular clinical interests in obstetric diabetes care, adolescent diabetes and the management of diabetic renal disease. He has also led the diabetes and endocrine service for East Lothian for the last 22 years.

He was recent Chair of the Scottish Study Group for the Care of Diabetes in the Young and has held a number of clinical management roles over the years, taking a lead role in the development of the Edinburgh Centre for Endocrinology and Diabetes.

He has long had a major interest in training and assessment. He has been Training Programme Director for Endocrinology and Diabetes in South-East Scotland since 1999, supervising one of the acknowledged top training programmes in the UK, which has been responsible for producing several of our current consultants! He was previously Secretary of the national Specialist Advisory Committee in Endocrinology and Diabetes and represented the UK on the Endocrine Section of the Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes for 7 years. He is currently Medical Secretary of the MRCP(UK) Clinical Examining Board and Vice-President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, with a specific remit for education, training and standards.
